About An Chéad Tine Art Organisation
Who We Are
An Chéad Tine Art Organisation is a not-for-profit collective established in July 2022 to support and champion visual arts in Kilkenny. Born from a clear and growing need for supportive, affordable workspaces for artists, the organisation is run voluntarily by a Board of Directors and practising artists and is an integral part of Kilkenny’s visual arts ecology and cultural landscape.
In Summer 2023, we proudly opened An Chéad Tine Art Gallery on the 1st Floor of Dunnes Stores, Kieran Street, in the heart of Kilkenny City. Opened during the 50th anniversary of the Kilkenny Arts Festival, the gallery provides a central, accessible space for contemporary visual art, welcoming both local audiences and visitors to engage with a diverse and dynamic programme of exhibitions and events.
Alongside the gallery, An Chéad Tine supports artists through professional studio and workspace provision across multiple city-centre locations. Our studios offer emerging and established artists the time, space, and supportive environment needed to develop their practice, while our exhibition programme - selected through open submission calls - ensures fair access and opportunity for artists across Ireland. Together, our gallery and studios play a vital role in making visual art visible, accessible, and embedded in everyday life in Kilkenny.

“Supporting visual artists at every stage of their career.”
What We Offer
EXHIBITIONS & PUBLIC PROGRAMMES
Our public gallery presents contemporary and dynamic exhibitions by local and Irish artists, selected through open submission calls to ensure fair access and opportunity. Alongside exhibitions, our programme includes workshops, readings, classes, and events that make visual art accessible to a wide and diverse public in the heart of Kilkenny.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & COLLABORATION
We support artists through professional development opportunities, in-house productions and co-productions, and active collaboration with cultural, educational, and community organisations. By working with partners across the cultural and economic sectors, we expand networks for artists and encourage engagement as creators, collaborators, participants, and audiences.
STUDIOS & WORKSPACES
An Chéad Tine provides city-centre studio and workspace opportunities for emerging and established artists across multiple disciplines. Our studios offer artists the time, space, and supportive working environment needed to develop and progress their practice, with opportunities relevant to different art forms and stages of career development.
Overview Established in July 2022, An Chéad Tine Art Organisation (CLG) arose from a unique need for supportive workspaces and additional exhibiting space for artists. It is a non-profit organisation integral to the visual arts ecology and cultural landscape of Kilkenny and Ireland, voluntarily run by a Board of Directors with creative backgrounds. Organisational Objective Our objective is to offer city-centre studio and workspaces and exhibition space for artists to develop and progress their practice in a supportive working environment that addresses key points in the creative cycle by which art is made. We focus on established and emerging artists of multiple disciplines. Artistic Vision and Values Our gallery and studio spaces, open to the public, contribute to the development of the arts in Ireland, encompassing multiple disciplines. We are an organisation that prioritises the artist and public engagement, and from our formation, we have outlined a range of actions which we undertake to deliver on our vision. These actions lie within the guidelines of the strategy of Making Great Artwork, reaffirming our commitment to excellence, freedom of expression and diversity in the context of an ever-changing Ireland and an ever-changing world of art in Ireland. Artist Support and Professional Development We here at An Chéad Tine have a vision that prioritises support for artists throughout their careers, providing professional development opportunities for practising artists through studio space opportunities for a meaningful length of time, up to a maximum term, and relevant to the requirements of artists of different art forms and practices. In-house Productions and Partnerships We work with many organisations in the cultural and economic sectors in Kilkenny and Ireland and are constantly growing our network, which in turn grows the network for the artists that we work with. This includes working with cultural and other organisations such as arts centres and venues, local authority arts offices, festivals, libraries and schools, engaging people as artists, audience members, collaborators and participants. Public Engagement and Creative Economy We are aware of the impact of the arts in Kilkenny on the creative economy and are continually rewarded by the depth and breadth of public engagement with the programme of arts we provide in the public gallery space in the heart of Kilkenny. We work to strengthen the focus on the arts as a central part of Irish life, maintaining the ethos that originally drove the creation of this space: to provide a diversified art programme in an everyday community setting, bringing art directly to a public that otherwise may never encounter it.
